threshold mala is a 108-bead meditation mala created as a symbolic passage through resistance, release, insight and integration.

made from natural onyx, labradorite, sodalite, lapis lazuli, amethyst and clear quartz, it was designed as a tactile companion for meditation, breathwork, journaling and moments of inner transition.

this mala is not built around a single stone, but around a process - a movement from density and resistance towards clarity, stillness and return.

Description

i created threshold mala as an object of passage.

its composition follows a quiet inner movement: from resistance, through the loosening of limiting beliefs, towards insight, meditation and integration.

the darker stones open the sequence with weight, grounding and friction. gradually, the mala moves through stones associated with clarity, discernment and inner vision, before softening into amethyst and clear quartz — a calmer, more spacious ending.

to me, this mala is not about escape. it is about staying with the process long enough for something to shift.

it can be used bead by bead during meditation or breath repetition, held during journaling, or kept close as a tactile reminder of transition, focus and return.

the intention

a passage through four phases

breaking resistance

the first phase holds the density of the beginning - the moment before movement, when resistance is still present but the passage has already opened.

releasing limiting beliefs

the second phase moves into mental clarity and discernment. it is about seeing the patterns, stories and structures that no longer need to lead.

opening insight

the third phase introduces a more spacious inner quality — inward vision, truth, perception and a quieter form of clarity.

meditation and integration

the final phase gathers the whole path back into the body. it is not a clean ending, but an integration of everything that came before.

composition

108-bead structure

this mala is composed of 108 natural stone beads, plus an onyx guru bead and a hand-finished double ending in place of a traditional tassel.

full bead composition

  • 33 onyx beads

  • 19 labradorite beads

  • 14 sodalite beads

  • 13 lapis lazuli beads

  • 16 clear quartz beads

  • 13 amethyst beads

bead size

  • main stone beads: approx. 6–8 mm

  • guru bead: larger polished onyx

  • ending beads: larger amethyst beads with faceted amethyst and faceted sodalite accents

because the stones are natural, slight differences in size, shape, tone, surface and translucency may appear. these variations are part of the character of the piece.

phase breakdown

1. breaking resistance — 27 beads

  • 18 onyx

  • 9 labradorite

onyx gives the beginning weight and grounding. labradorite introduces the sense of threshold — the first movement through what feels fixed.

2. releasing limiting beliefs — 27 beads

  • 14 onyx

  • 13 sodalite

this phase is built around the tension between heaviness and clarity. onyx holds the ground, while sodalite brings a more reflective, discerning quality.

3. opening insight — 27 beads

  • 12 lapis lazuli

  • 9 labradorite

  • 6 clear quartz

this section opens the composition towards perception, truth and inward vision. lapis lazuli gives depth, labradorite keeps the sense of transition, and clear quartz introduces light and space.

4. meditation and integration — 27 beads

  • 12 amethyst

  • 9 clear quartz

  • 1 onyx

  • 1 labradorite

  • 1 sodalite

  • 1 lapis lazuli

  • 1 amethyst

  • 1 clear quartz

the final six beads form a small synthesis of the entire path — one bead from each stone used in the mala. they close the sequence not by erasing the journey, but by gathering it into one integrated rhythm.

finishing

guru and ending

the mala is finished with a larger onyx guru bead.

in traditional mala practice, the guru bead marks the point of return. it is not counted in the same way as the other beads. it becomes a pause — a threshold — before the direction of practice changes.

instead of a classic tassel, this mala has a double hand-finished ending:

  • one cord is finished with a larger amethyst bead and three faceted amethyst beads

  • the second cord is finished with a larger amethyst bead and faceted sodalite beads

this ending was created as a more sculptural alternative to a tassel — heavier, quieter and more architectural, while still connected to the stones used in the full composition.

material symbolism

natural stones

this mala is made using natural precious and semi-precious stones sourced from trusted polish suppliers and selected for tone, texture and integrity.

each stone carries its own variations in colour, translucency, inclusions and surface detail. no two malas are ever exactly the same.

stone language

onyx

grounding, inner strength, weight, steadiness.

labradorite

threshold, transition, subtle movement, change.

sodalite

clarity, discernment, mental order, release of old patterns.

lapis lazuli

truth, insight, inward vision, deeper perception.

amethyst

stillness, contemplation, inner space, meditative quiet.

clear quartz

clarity, integration, light, conscious presence.

the stones in this mala are not presented as guarantees of change, but as materials chosen for their symbolic resonance, tactile presence and coherence within the whole composition..

use

how it can be used

threshold mala can be used for:

  • meditation

  • breath repetition

  • mantra or phrase repetition

  • journaling rituals

  • grounding before or after practice

  • moments of transition, reflection and return

you may use it bead by bead in a traditional way, or simply hold it as a tactile anchor when your attention needs direction.

packaging

included

each mala comes with:

  • handmade protective case

  • hand-finished silk pouch

  • authenticity & care card printed on thick, textured paper

the final form of the protective case may vary depending on the design series — wood or polymer — but each one is created to protect the mala and honour the ritual of keeping it.

lifetime care

restringing care

threshold mala is covered by lifetime restringing care.

if, over time, the thread loosens or the mala comes undone through use, you may send it back to me and i will restring it by hand.

your mala was created to last.

if, at any point, the energy of your practice proves stronger than the thread, send it back to me — i will restring it for you by hand.

note

i create kalarthe malas as objects for meditation, reflection and personal ritual. they are not medical, therapeutic or clinical tools.
