for shadow, grounding and clear return

nocturne mala is a 108-bead meditation mala created for the quiet work of shadow, grounding and clear return.

here, shadow does not mean darkness as something negative. it refers to the unseen parts of the self - the fears, instincts, tensions and old patterns that often remain beneath the surface until we are ready to meet them.

this mala was created as a tactile object for that inward work: protective, grounding and clear. a piece to hold when the world feels too loud, when attention scatters, or when you need to return to your own centre without abandoning what asks to be seen.

Description

i created nocturne mala as a piece for the darker hours of practice.

not darkness as fear, but darkness as depth - the space where the mind becomes quieter, where unnecessary noise falls away, and where attention can gather again.

this mala was designed for inward work: for meeting what is hidden without being overwhelmed by it. for holding your boundaries when the world feels too loud. for returning to yourself with more steadiness, protection and clarity.

the composition is built mostly from dark stones: obsidian, tourmaline, onyx, hematite and black natural stone beads. together, they create a strong, grounding rhythm - heavy, focused and contained. grey jade softens the structure with a calmer, more embodied presence, so the piece does not become only a shield, but also a place of return.

the red thread is intentionally visible between the beads. it brings a living pulse into the dark composition and refers to the old symbolism of red thread as a sign of protection, vitality and resistance to unwanted influence.

at the centre of the mala, the raw clear quartz guru bead creates a moment of light. it does not break the nocturnal character of the piece - it clarifies it.

this composition moves through shadow and protection without closing into darkness. the clear quartz guru brings the practice back to clarity, presence and return.

the intention

a mala for shadow, grounding and return

nocturne mala was created around four inner qualities:

shadow

the darker stones give this mala its depth. they create a space for looking inward without rushing towards brightness too quickly.

grounding

the weight of hematite, onyx, obsidian, tourmaline and dark stone beads brings the practice back into the body.

protection

the red thread, obsidian, tourmaline and onyx create a symbolic line of boundary - not as fear, but as conscious containment.

clear return

the raw clear quartz guru bead brings light into the darker structure. it becomes the point of pause, clarity and return.

this is not a mala of expansion.

it is a mala of containment, focus and returning to centre.

composition

108-bead structure

this mala is composed of 108 natural stone beads, plus a raw clear quartz guru bead and a hand-finished double tassel ending.

  • 12 black natural stone beads — approx. 10 mm

  • 10 grey jade beads — approx. 8 mm

  • 24 obsidian beads — approx. 8 mm

  • 30 tourmaline beads — approx. 8 mm

  • 20 onyx beads — approx. 8 mm

ending

the hand-finished ending includes:

  • 1 hematite bead

  • 10 clear quartz beads

  • large faceted obsidian teardrop

  • red tassels

  • copper fittings

size and weight

  • length to guru bead: approx. 56 cm

  • full length to the end of the tassel: approx. 70 cm

  • weight: approx. 130 g

because this mala is made from natural stones, slight variations in colour, surface, translucency, shape and inclusions are part of the character of the piece.

finishing

he guru bead is a raw piece of clear quartz - irregular, luminous and intentionally unpolished.

in traditional mala practice, the guru bead marks the point of return. it is not counted in the same way as the other beads. it becomes a pause - a threshold - before the direction of practice changes.

in nocturne mala, the clear quartz guru bead acts as a point of light within a darker composition. it is the moment of clarity inside the shadow.

instead of a simple tassel, this mala is finished with a more expressive double ending.

one side continues the clarity of the guru through small clear quartz beads. the other is weighted by a large faceted obsidian teardrop. copper fittings complete the red tassels, adding warmth, contrast and a hand-finished material presence.

the ending is deliberately more visible and ceremonial than in quieter malas. it gives the piece its talisman-like character, not as ornament alone, but as a symbolic closing of the whole composition.

material symbolism

natural stones

this mala is made using natural precious and semi-precious stones sourced from trusted polish suppliers and selected for tone, texture and integrity.

each stone carries its own variations in colour, translucency, inclusions and surface detail. no two malas are ever exactly the same.

stone language

obsidian

depth, shadow, protection and clear boundary.

tourmaline

grounding, steadiness and protection from overwhelm.

onyx

inner strength, focus, stability and containment.

hematite

weight, structure, discipline and embodied presence.

black natural stone

quiet density, grounding and visual continuity.

grey jade

calm strength, balance and a softer form of resilience.

clear quartz

clarity, conscious presence and light within structure.

copper

warmth, earth, connection and handmade material presence.

red thread

used here as a symbolic reference to protection, vitality and resistance to unwanted influence.

the stones and materials in this mala are not presented as guarantees of change, but as symbolic, tactile and visual elements chosen for their coherence within the whole composition.

  • breath repetition

  • mantra or phrase repetition

  • grounding practice

  • journaling rituals

  • moments of overstimulation

the final form of the protective case may vary depending on the design series — wood or polymer — but each one is created to protect the mala and honour the ritual of keeping it.
